Lately I am noticing a trend where it relates to the “Tweeted” Twitter content affects on a Blog. Recently I decided to Tweet various content types as they relate to Rageburner. Since the concept of Rageburner covers several topics I wanted to supplement Blog content with articles on Twitter via links or “tweets”. By supplement I mean distribute content on Twitter that could potentially have been promoted as an article on Rageburner.

It worked by increasing Twitter followers but not site traffic on Rageburner. Sure new followers visit Rageburner, but do they come back consistently to see what Today’s “Rant or Rage” might be? Rageburner’s presence on Twitter far exceeds its Blog readers which leads us to question the priority of each. Do you tweet to increase followers or promote a Blog on Twitter to increase subscribers?

At one point I heavily promoted Rageburner content on Twitter and received alot of negative email and DM responses. Rightfully so I felt it became a self promotion rather than social focus. Twitter is about sharing, assisting others and building relationships. Therefore I only publish a couple Rageburner articles daily and tweet content received daily by Rageburner subscribers.

The result showed that relationships and connections on Twitter far exceed your blog’s need for promotion. Staying current and focused on your Twitter content provides one of many legs for blog traffic but should not be considered its primary source. If an author or subscriber disagrees, please provide data or comment otherwise.

BitTorrent vs Apple for Video Downloads

The high Steaks poker Game Has begun; Hollywood watches and waits. As Bit Torrent takes on Apple in a battle for your video downloads.

Earlier this year Apple pushes for and gets removal of DRM (digital rights management) from music and video downloads on Itunes. Just as Bit Torrent goes head to head with Itunes on video downloads.

In February Bit Torrent Inc, the internet company founded by Bram Cohen opened it’s new entertainment web site.

For those who don’t know about Bit Torrent yet, it is a protocol, that can be used free of charge to download large files quickly over the internet using very little band width, It was invented by Bram Cohen.

Last year Cohen’s company entered into agreements with several movie companies among them Paramount, Warner Brothers, MGM,20th Century Fox and MTV networks. This was the ground work for them to build their business model for a broad market video download service. MTV is a key company because of it’s market demographics.

Apple was quick to follow suit and made it’s own agreements with various movie companies.

This latest effort by Bit Torrent will offer a strong competition to Apple’s Itunes as well as other movie download sites, such as ,Walmart and don’t forget DirectTV and cable on demand
services.

What Bit Torrent offers is rental downloads, purchase downloads and some free downloads. It also offers an opportunity for you to publish your own torrents. Very attractive to new producers of video content. This appears to be a move to create a home for original content providers at the Bit Torrent web site.

You might say that is all well and good but how do I watch the content on my big screen TV? Good question.

Two months ago Bit Torrent announced it’s partnership with the company Netgear , which has developed a small inexpensive interface cable box to use to transfer your movies, video and other content from your computer to your TV. Hmm…. sounds a lot like Apple TV.

In an interview on CNBC May 3, 2007 Patrick Lo, the chief executive of Netgear said that Netgear’s plan is to use it’s wireless networks in the home to drive content from the internet to the home TV and make everyone’s home a wireless network.

Not so fast Bit Torrent; last week Apple counters with , what else, video on demand.

London’s financial Times wrote an article indicating that Apple would be offering a video on demand download service in the Fall. And the downloads would be rentals that would cost $2.99. These rental downloads would be good for thirty days and could be shared on one or more of Apple’s devices, Apple TV, iphone or ipod.

This latest move by Apple seems to have placed Apple and Bit Torrent in direct competition with all other video on demand services, which include Amazon’s service, Netflix service and the cable and direct TV companies services.

The gamble would appear to be for Apple and Bit Torrent to drive these other services to a point where they are marginal players and for one of them, that is Bit Torrent or Apple to emerge as the consumer favorite for video and internet content downloads and streaming wirelessly.

A question arises; where is Microsoft in all this? Are they missing the boat again? Or just waiting for the dust to clear?

Hollywood is placing bets on as many power players as it can; hence the agreements with both Bit Torrent and Apple waiting to see who comes out on top.

Twitter Sociology by Liz Pullen

Liz Pullen analyzed behaviors of new users and twitter usage from personnel to business practicalities. It creates an inciteful world of understanding while exploring the vast realm of Twitter.

Twitmatic with Twitter

Twitmatic is simply one of the best twitter apps I have found to date and left me absolutely satisfied following a simple search query. I often like to research and develop my blog posts by looking and listening to video and trending discussions from Twitter. I often find it hard to search conversations and tweets from thousands of followers and require organization. Quite simply Twitmatic gives me what I need, when I need it most. Thousands of video links provided via tweets, playable within a simple interface and easily managed.

Below is a quick search I use daily for tracking the latest iPhone and Twitter Tweets including a general News category.

What I found fascinating is that clicking through several links takes a minimal amount of time and all from within the same screen. You will also find a real-time stat tally at the top of screen indicating new video links since your last search. Its great to search a current topic or late breaking story within moments vs. scanning multiple online news channels. I found it to be very fast and efficient with ongoing timely improvements. Finally, be sure and click through some of the Top Trending tags found to the left as demonstrated above.

New features are listed below found in the most recent release version 2 of Twitmatic:

Users can now login to Twitmatic with their Twitter credentials, allowing them to follow/unfollow people without leaving Twitmatic, as well as Favorite a Tweet/video and access it from the Twitter Favorites list later.
Users can now input a search term into Twitmatic, which pulls all back videos for them based on the search. One of the best things about Twitmatic is that the more people search, the better the index will be and the faster the results.
If logged into Twitmatic with their Twitter credentials, users can save their searches as channels on a new left-hand navigation pane and come back to them in the future.
Twitmatic constantly checks for new video results based on the channel the users is viewing; when new results come in, the user is notified via a message on the page and can simply refresh to see the new videos.
A Video View and a List View, giving the user choice in how they want to see and respond to incoming tweets. And yes, users can now Reply to tweets in Twitmatic.
Twitmatic now has a Back button that allows users to review videos they’ve already seen in the current session.

Winslet & DiCaprio

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have given cash to help pay the nursing home fees of the last survivor of the Titanic. The Hollywood stars – who made their international names in the 1997 film about the sinking of the liner – were approached by a charity to help 97-year-old Millvina Dean, and the movie’s director James Cameron has also made a donation.

It’s believed the trio have donated 30,000 U.S. dollars (”22,000) to help Miss Dean, who was nine-weeks-old when the liner sank in April 1912. Miss Dean – who is from the New Forest, Hampshire – has been living at a nursing home for a few years and last month she auctioned personal belongings and memorabilia associated with the disaster to help pay for the ”3,000-a-month cost of her care.

The campaign called the Millvina Fund was launched in Belfast today (Monday May 11), where the liner was built, and it will help secure her future. In a joint statement, the stars said: “Our hope is that others will feel inspired by Millvina Dean’s remarkable story of survival, and hope she can rest easier in knowing that her future will become more secure through this fund.” Irish author Don Mullan, a friend of Miss Dean, approached the stars to lend their support. He’s also produced a limited edition photograph depicting Millvina signing a card for an autograph collector, which are selling for 500 euro (”440) with all proceeds going towards the Millvina Fund. He’s also keen to enlist the support of Celine Dion, who sang the theme tune from Titanic.

Twitter for Business

When I first heard about Twitter “The Microblogging phenomena that everyone seems to be talking about at the moment I really did wonder what the fuss was about. I thought it was interesting but it did not initially grab me.

Why would other people care about what I had for lunch, or who was at the airport and why someone was sad? And why would a business become involved in this, what possible purpose could it serve? Then I thought maybe it is about the cult of personality maybe it is about micro-fame and perceived short attention spans, I mean 140 characters did not seem like much.

What I have come to realize though is that, at its heart, Twitter is just a communication tool. Like the Web, and the phone and the telegram before it, it’s just a tool to let one person connect with another.

How Does Twitter Work?
Users have 140 characters to answer the question, What are you doing?” If you join Twitter you can follow” others, allowing their updates to appear on your home page. They can follow you, with the same result or you can also direct message them, but always in 140 characters or less.

Twitter communications can be viewed and updated on the Web, through desktop apps, and on mobile devices. My two personal favorites being tweetie and Tweetdeck, both of which allow me to interact easily whether at my desk or on the road.

Tweets (recent 140 character posts) tell you what people are having for breakfast, that they are worried about how their job interview went or that they are planning a romantic dinner with their partners. These can sometimes be very weird indeed if you spend time looking at the public twitter time line rather than just your followers.

How Does Twitter Help You Work?
A growing number of people are beginning to using Twitter for business. And as I have said in pervious posts I am not talking about the internet marketers trying solely to increase their traffic. Instead more and more professional are using Twitter as a communications tool.

Here are some things that you might want to think about:

Follow industry leaders who post links to important resources and influence conversations
Post questions for quick answers and answer others’ questions to establish your credibility and expertise
Create links to your Web site or blog (don’t over do it!)
Keep up on the buzz in your industry
Network with like-minded people.

How to Find (The Right) People on Twitter:

You can use Twitter search to look for subject that interest you and follow the people talking most about them. You can use third party sites and tools like Mr Tweet. Mr Tweet finds and suggests like-minded people based on your tweets.
Twellow: Searches based on location,categories and keywords.

How to Get People to Follow You:
The more people who follow you on Twitter, the more influence and networking opportunities you have. It makes sense therefore to try and build a following. Here are some ideas on getting others to follow you.

Follow them. Most people follow people who follow them as long as they are not just trying simply to increase followers for its own sake.
Be discriminating with whom you follow. I find that if someone follows me and they only tweet about how hungry or tired they are, I don’t follow them back. The same goes for people who haven’t tweeted in a while.
Complete your Profile. People rarely follow strangers, so complete your one-line bio and include a URL in the More Info URL section of your profile. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve not bothered to follow someone because I didn’t know a thing about them.
Add your Twitter feed to your blog or to other social media profiles. Having my Twitter feed linked to facebook and Friend has increase the number of people that I know who now use Twitter itself.
Reply to people you are following, especially if they’re not yet following you. That’s a good way to engage someone and get them to follow you, even if they didn’t follow you immediately. Remember, though, some people have thousands of followers, and may not be able to respond to every reply.

Getting the Most Out of Twitter:
While the guidelines of Twitter etiquette are still evolving, guidelines from other social media sites can used:

Treat others with respect
Participate
Don’t just try and sell something.

iPhone Security Lock?

In a world where convenience rules our lives, the iPhone continues to surprise. I have seen alot of great applications developed for the iPhone including blood glucose testing and wireless air phone applications. Now the trendy development portal of the iPhone comes home security. Even though other wireless devices can utilize Schlage’s LiNK application it is the cool factor that come into play here.

Adobe is looking to revolutionise the way we stream media content in the home with its latest version of Flash.

Called the Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home, the new technology allows entertainment providers for the first time the ability to stream content directly to TVs, via an internet-connected television or to a set-top box.

Previous versions of Flash meant that you would have to hook up a PC to a TV to act as a media server for Flash content.

Blu-ray players and set-top boxes

The new technology essentially cuts out the middle-man, meaning that accessing Flash content on your television will be easier than ever with Adobe, the makers of Flash, trying to bring web-based streaming into average consumers’ homes.

So far, Adobe has signed up the following companies to support the new Flash format: Atlantic Records, Broadcom, Comcast, Disney Interactive Media Group, Intel, Netflix, STMicroelectronics, The New York Times Company, NXP Semiconductors and Sigma Designs.

While no official date has been put in place for the software to reach homes, it is expected that optimised set-top boxes and Blu-ray players will arrive in 2010.

OnStar’s Twitter Integration ?

Voice activated Twitter from your GM vehicle?

Recent OnStar surveys confirmed that Twitter Voice activated text messaging updates are soon to become a reality. Those seeking a greater social advantage over others may enjoy the feature or see it as an inconvenience.

Below is the reported OnStar survey heard by motorists while seeking favorite restaurant information or waiting for an OnStar operator:

“While in your vehicle, you can use OnStar to submit and retrieve tweets (messages) via your Twitter account. Using OnStar’s Voice-Activated Hands-Free Calling system, and having your voice converted into text, you can provide updates which would appear in the “What are you doing?” section of your Twitter homepage. It is also possible to listen to a tweet that was sent to you by someone else after it has been converted into voice. You can send and receive tweets without having to type or read anything.”

I see a multitude of uses. For example, simply saying “New Blog Idea” with an “@ link” reference could update thousands of twitter followers immediately. Major benefits related to company and news organizations vying for the top spot to report an immediate tweet of breaking news. Simple tasks could include “headed to the fork river for a picnic” or notifying a fellow follower of a important event. In return OnStar can return the twitter text @reply into voice to listen to the response.

Although reasoning allows us to see the advantage of OnStar Twittering, what reality will push us to see the benefit? If costs in addition to OnStar feed the equation I see people grabbing an iPhone, in car phone or other cellular device to provide an update.

No previous statement from OnStar regarding release is known at this point.
